CANDLELIGHT RESTORATIVE SESSION WITH GUEST TEACHER, COLLEEN DWYER
Friday, 4/24 • 6:00 - 8:00 pm
The busyness of life often gets us caught in a state of over-doing. This workshop will demonstrate the importance of slowing down. We will start with a body and breath focus, some gentle movement, and then transition into a restorative yoga practice. With yoga props supporting the body, you rest in postures for prolonged periods of time, and the body is able to relax on a deeper level. The stillness of the postures allow your body to rejuvenate, and your nervous system to calm, so you are naturally guided towards health and well being. Pranayama (breath-exercise) will be integrated throughout.
Colleen (E-RYT 500) will take some time after the workshop to talk with anyone who would like more information on her upcoming Restorative Yoga Training, at In Balance Yoga - September 25th to 28th.

Meet Jennifer Miller: Our In Balance Yoga Teachers
Each month we will highlight a different In Balance Yoga teacher so you can learn more about us and our IBY team.
Tell us about your first yoga experience?
About 20 years ago, I was invited to a friend's house for a private session with an Ashtanga Yoga teacher. I had been a fitness instructor for a few years and considered myself to be fit and strong. When we began the practice, I was quickly humbled by the sun salutations and surprised that I lacked the core and upper body strength for vinyasa. I loved the dynamic nature of Ashtanga and the way movement and breath were united. I felt that day like I had found my Yoga home. I spent the next three years studying and practicing with that same teacher and began to teach Ashtanga Yoga myself.
What is it that you hope to share to your students? What can students expect when they walk in the door to your class?
I hope to offer my students the opportunity to practice Yoga in a place that is nurturing and encouraging to them. I hope they will be comfortable in my class no matter how long they have been practicing or what their abilities are. I hope to inspire them to grow fitter and stronger at the pace that is right for them. My students can expect an athletic practice based on the Ashtanga tradition. They can expect some humor and a relaxed, personable teaching style.
We want to learn more about you. What would your perfect day look like?
A perfect day would start with a strong cup of black coffee and the Primary Series. Then I would teach my classes and connect with others for a while. I would get back home in time for an afternoon nap before the school bus brings my daughters home. Then, time with my family to talk and dance and joke and cook dinner and unwind. I feel so lucky that I have this "perfect" day nearly everyday.
What is your favorite quote?
"Love is what we are born with. Fear is what we have learned here. The spiritual journey is the relinquishment - or unlearning - of fear and the acceptance of love back into our hearts." - from "A Return to Love, Reflections on the Principles of a Course in Miracles" by Marianne Williamson
What inspires your teaching style?
These days, my teaching style is mainly inspired by my personal practice. The time I spend on my mat with my own body informs and inspires my teaching more than anything else. My teaching style is also deeply influenced by the years I spent practicing with my Ashtanga teacher. I absorbed so much knowledge and experience in those years of study with him. I still use his sequencing in my vinyasa classes and hear his voice in my head describing alignment and technique.
Where is your favorite place to practice yoga?
How has practicing yoga transformed your own life?
Wow, in every way. Yoga has taught me to surrender, to trust the process, and to do the work.
What is your favorite music to listen to while practicing?
I choose music depending on my mood. I love traditional yoga music and often play it when I teach. But, an occasional practice with Bob Marley or Moby can be a nice change of pace.
What is your favorite aspect of teaching?
I love the challenge of designing a practice from start to finish. I typically spend some time before class loosely planning what I will teach. I have fun selecting postures that progress naturally into each other and making sequences of postures that will open or strengthen a particular part of the body. I also love being in a room full of people who are practicing together. There is an energy and connection in group practice that lifts me up.
