“Little Known Blues Fest” in Cape Town Jan 9, 2016
|
DURBANVILLE, SOUTH AFRICA - Kick off 2016 with a proper outdoor shindig! This outdoor festival celebrates the much-loved blues genre in the heart of the Cape Winelands. The sixth Little Known Blues Fest comes to the Hillcrest Quarry in Durbanville on Saturday, 9 January 2016.
The aim of the event is to give lesser-known bands a platform to shine while fans get to see some raw talent and enjoy the tunes with a fun day out.
Take a few friends, a picnic basket and bring some camping chairs to have a wild time in the sunshine. If you’re feeling like some nibbles or an ice-cold pint, there’s a fully stocked bar and food stalls on site. No alcohol can be brought onto the premises. Children are welcome, but have to be supervised. Read more about the Little Known Blues Fest

CLARKSDALE. MS - Back in the day, early blues musicians migrated to Clarksdale, Miss., where they honed their musical crafts and eventually formed a blues culture.
It’s hard to say if they knew they were creating an epicenter for the evolution of the blues, but they did. Some were born and raised in the rural Mississippi area. Others were drawn to it.
The blues culture lives on in this tiny spot on the map that was once a transportation hub for highways, railways and public transpiration.
Highways 61 and 49 connect in Clarksdale — an important crossroad 30 years before the interstate systems sprawled across the country. It also is the crossroad immortalized by Robert Johnson, who supposedly sold his soul in exchange for mastering the blues.
Illinois Central (IC) and other railroads maintained depots and passenger terminals. The Greyhound Bus Company also built a station in Clarksdale.

Blues Boot Camp 2015: A Participants Perspective
|
DRYSDALE, VICTORIA, AU - When you look at the history of music throughout the ages, most of the modern day pop hits, to some extent amidst the electronic drumbeats and heavy bass lines, have some resemblance to blues music. Now this may seem like a very strange concept for you to grasp at the moment, yet all roots of music nowadays pays homage one way or another to the blues. There is just something pure, simple and electric to blues music that you just don’t seem to get these days. In the delta in the deep south of America, the living conditions throughout the Great Depression and the mid 1930s and 40s were horrific. Throughout all of the recordings from that day you are able to hear the true struggle of human life. ...Read entire article & find how to participate

Brad Absher & Swamp Royale :: LUCKY DOG
|
|
Lucky Dog is the first for Montrose Records from Brad Absher, the Houston-based singer/guitarist & practitioner of the “Gulf Coast Blues & Soul” sound. The album was recorded at Montrose Records Studio in Houston and produced by label head Richard Cagle and acclaimed bassist Larry Fulcher (Taj Mahal), who also adds his trademark bass lines throughout the disc. The rest of the musicians involved in the recording are primarily members of Absher’s solid touring band, rightly dubbed “Swamp Royale” for the earthy, soulful sounds they create around Brad’s masterful guitar work and vocals.
Brad Absher’s Gulf Coast sound recipe includes equal amounts of blues, soul, and gospel, stirred up just right into a magical gumbo that goes down easy and has a spicy kick to it, recalling the best of Memphis and Muscle Shoals, too. ... Find more details about this release

Dalannah and Owen :: BEEN AROUND A WHILE
|
Been Around A While represents a watershed moment for the Canadian blues duo, Dalannah and Owen. Filled with a bold mix of well-constructed original compositions and carefully selected covers of artists such as Son House, Louis Jordan, and Marvin Gaye, it's the result of two world-class talents combining to create something fresh and new. Dalannah's impassioned, gospel-soaked vocals and Owen's versatile, mood-setting bass come together to form a sound that's emotionally potent, musically unforgettable, and spiritually transcendent.
With 90 years of music between them, this unlikely duo came together in July 2014, one week before British Columbia's White Rock Blues Society Regional International Blues Challenge. Been Around A While, their first disc as a duo, is about the love of music and Dalannah and Owen's respect for one another.
