Blues News You Can Use!
Obviously...
You just opened your email (or accessed online) this e-news we send you each week and obviously you expect it to contain news about Ozark Blues Society and blues related events in Northwest Arkansas.  Well grab a cup of joe or a cold one before you sit down to read this weeks edition because it is full of lots of important and interesting news. Hopefully many of you caught Little Joe's show last weekend.  Coming up this week OBS is helping to promote the Wednesday evening show at George's featuring the Rick Gibson Band.  It's 7-9 pm so come make your hump day better....and you can still get home early enough to get to work the next day! You will find more information below on the concert.  Also don't miss the new article and link about the International Song Writing Competition. But more importantly, the
article just below is one I certainly don't
want you to miss. It is an update on one
of our board members,

Finally, I only got a couple emails with gig information and suggestions for articles recently so don't forget I want to hear back from people.  Also I would still like to build a list of bands and venues that you want to be
sure I include.  Let me know your thoughts.
You know the deal, e-mail me anytime at smccann7@sbcglobal.net

Thank You Roger Plourde
On behalf of the Ozark Blues Society board of directors we want to share the following message.

The Ozark Blues Society wishes the all the best for Roger Plourde and his wife Mary as they prepare to move to New Hampshire. Roger has been a tremendous leader of OBS during his time here in northwest Arkansas. Having joined the Ozark Blues Society (OBS) in 2009, he was elected to the Board in 2010. Based on his vision for growing the impact of the society throughout the region, Roger was elected President for a first term in 2011-2012 and then re-elected for a second term serving 2013-2014. During this time, Roger raised the profile of OBS and increased the operating budget 10-fold through sponsorships and organizing fund raising events. His passion for the blues and his leadership is what made the success of the Blues in the Natural State festivals possible during his time as president. With Roger as president, OBS sponsored a second place International Blues Challenge winner (Lucious Spiller 2014) and a first place winner (Ray Bonneville 2012). Roger has been dependable and a tireless leader in the pursuit of “keeping the blues alive.” Although we’ll miss having Roger in Arkansas,  we look forward to seeing him in Memphis for the International Blues Challenge. Well done Roger and best wishes for you and your family in New Hampshire!  ~Roy McCann

At the 2015 competition earlier this year, 255 acts were entered, filling the clubs up and down Beale Street for the quarter finals on Wednesday and Thursday, the semi-finals on Friday and the finals at the Orpheum Theater on Saturday. There will be at least that many artists competing in 2016.

Report from the Portland Safeway Waterfront Blues Fest in Portland, OR.
 By Boyce Wofford
Report from the Portland Safeway Waterfront Blues Fest in Portland, OR.

A few weeks ago Sandy noted that one of the best fireworks displays in the country was at the Waterfront Blues Fest in Portland, OR.
We happened to be there that weekend and I can say that it is, in fact, one of the best out there, especially when you consider that it is part of possibly the best blues fest in the country. We have been lucky enough to attend twice in the last 4 years and hope to return many times. The festival this year featured Greg Allman and his new band as the opening day headliner. His show was preceded by first Jaimoe’s Jaz Band, led by the former Allman Brothers drummer, and then by Devon Allman. To close the night they were all onstage in the jam to end all jams! If you get a chance to hear Greg’s new band, don’t pass it up. They could have shut down the festival that night and it would have been awesome, but it went on for 3 more days culminating with the legendary Mr. Buddy Guy!
The Portland festival has two main stages on either end of the waterfront park. Like clockwork when one band ends the next stage fires up. You just turn your chair. And if that isn’t enough, there are two other stages! There are workshops, demonstrations, album sales where you can usually meet the artist, and a half mile of food and beverage vendors selling Portland’s finest, and all of that followed by at least two after parties at nearby hotels. And also several blues cruises on the Willamette River.
There is so much more to do in the Portland area also, including approx. 300 of the best wineries in the world in the Willamette Valley, craft breweries, great food, jet boat rides, magnificent scenery everywhere you look. You’re less than an hour from the scenic Oregon coast one way and the Columbia River Gorge and Mount Hood the other. Put it on your Blues Bucket List!

" I dabbled in things like Howlin' Wolf, Cream and Led Zeppelin, but when I heard Son House and Robert Johnson, it blew my mind. It was something I'd been missing my whole life. That music made me discard everything else and just get down to the soul and honesty of the blues."
